The Vienna Railway Colloquium has been a fixture in the railway industry’s calendar for decades – and now for WITT Solutions too

In 2026, the event once again offered fascinating insights into current projects, technological advances and the future of rail transport. The Austrian Transport Research Society (ÖVG) makes it possible.

This year’s event focused on digitalisation, sustainability and improving efficiency in rail transport. Experts from academia, industry and politics discussed the challenges and opportunities facing the sector. Particular attention was paid to the integration of new propulsion technologies, the optimisation of transport networks and ensuring the competitiveness of rail transport in Europe.

The event not only provided professional insights but also offered valuable opportunities for personal discussion and networking with industry colleagues.

Managing Director Klaus Gradischek attended the event on behalf of WITT Solutions GmbH with great enthusiasm and interest.

We look forward to the next one Eisenbahnkolloquium

Thank you very much for the successful collaboration! BTH & WITT Solutions GmbH

Prof. Dr. Merkel Klaus Gradischek

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Prof. Dr Merkel from BHT Beuth University of Applied Sciences Berlin, as well as to Mr Klaus Gradischek and the entire team at WITT Solutions, for the excellent guidance and support they have provided to our two students as part of their bachelor’s theses in electrical engineering.

Thanks to the close collaboration between the university and WITT Solutions GmbH, not only were innovative solutions developed, but valuable practical experience was also gained. The successful defence of the theses underscores the commitment of all those involved and is testament to the fruitful combination of theory and practice.

A special thank you goes to the students for their motivation, expertise and perseverance throughout their electrical engineering studies – we are proud of your achievements and wish you all the best for your future careers!

Prof.Dr. Merkel
Klaus Gradischek

“Theory meets practice – and a good relationship”

With plenty of expertise, patience and the odd laugh during their studies (or in front of the camera), they have not only helped produce two successful final-year projects, but have also shown that electrical engineering can be not only fascinating, but also a lot of fun!

We are already looking forward to welcoming the next cohort of electrical engineering students and to the exciting project work – and, of course, to many more shared successes

Safety is no coincidence – it is the result of intelligent technology

Potential difference on rails: Why rail operators should not ignore this invisible risk

Just imagine: A railroad track in an African national park. Elephants cross the tracks – but what nobody sees is the potential difference between the rail and the ground. Due to reverse currents and unfavorable ground conditions, this voltage can become a deadly danger for animals, people and infrastructure.

Why is this relevant for the rail industry?

Berlin train station

Safety risk: electric shocks for maintenance teams, travelers or residents

Infrastructure damage: corrosion, short circuits, expensive breakdowns

Liability issues: Operators bear a high level of responsibility – legal consequences threaten in the event of accidents

The solution: real-time monitoring from WITT Solutions Our systems continuously measure the voltage between rail and earth and automatically initiate protective measures in the event of critical values – from warning messages to the shutdown of endangered sections.

Practical benefits:Preventive protection for people, animals and infrastructure ✔ Adaptation to local conditions (soil, climate, use) ✔ Seamless integration into existing control and safety technology

Example of success: In an African country, our systems significantly reduced fatal accidents involving elephants on railroad lines – while at the same time increasing the availability of the line.
