Application

On railways operated by direct current, the running rail is used as a return conductor for the traction current. The rail is insulated from the ground, as otherwise stray currents would cause corrosion to buildings and installations.
The return current flowing through the rail creates a potential difference relative to earth due to the rail’s electrical resistance. This potential difference can be tapped as a voltage between the rail or the vehicle and the structures or earth. This voltage is potentially dangerous to people. Therefore, in accordance with DIN EN 50122, it is mandatory to dissipate these voltages once a defined threshold value is reached. This is achieved by means of a temporary short circuit between the rails and the surrounding earth.

Description

The WITT EKS100 is a self-resetting earth fault circuit breaker in accordance with EN 50122-1. The device is configurable. The voltage differences between the return conductor and earth are monitored. A power contactor ensures a short switching time and a high current-carrying capacity. This earth fault short-circuit device features a particularly compact design. The WITT EKS100 operates on the quiescent current principle (normally closed).

Function

If the voltage curve entered is exceeded, the earth fault circuit breaker is triggered; in other words, once the tripping criteria are met, the contactor is activated. The contactor has a closing time of approx. 18 ms. The WITT EKS100 earth fault circuit breaker is
designed with dual-channel main assemblies and features self-test functions.
